Received some more photos from Jeff today. The AC, Alt and Throttle body are on the engine.
This is Michael Ruettger's ca, using a BMW engine. Below is an email he sent me with the attached pictures.
Hello Grant,
sorry for the late answer.
If you want to use a BMW V8 it is necessary to modify the chassis. I sent my engine to the factory
and they built my chassis for the BMW, made the gearbox adapter (for a G50) and modified the flywheel.
They should be able to do it again but as the chassis modifications are relative simple (welding necessary of course) they can be self made. If you need exact dimensions let me know.
It is of course necessary to manufacture a special exhaust system. This is a bit complicated as the
width of the cylinder heads doesn´t leave much space for the headers. I found a specialist who
built the exhaust system for me. He used the silencer of a Ferrari 348.
Not a simple task is the modification of the engine management. Without a complete car
around it the Bosch Motronic misses some signals. To avoid this and other problems
I bought a test bench engine. It´s Motronic and wiring was modified to run standalone. Just connect
a cooling system, a fuel system and a batterie and it should run. I hope it will. Couldn`t test it until now.
You can use an aftermarket engine management system but as my car has to meet the current emmisson regulations this is not an option for me.
The engine is a M62 from a 98 740i that meets EURO3. If you use a more modern version of it
they may meet EURO4. Maybe ist not only sufficient for you to use a clean engine. Eventually you
need to have such things as a carbon filter for the tank ventilation or an air pump to help the cats reach their working temperature quicker. Your local authorities should know.
Using a G50 or G64 a central gearshift is possible, but the routing of the rods isn´t ideal.
Much better solution is a gearbox with cable gear shift.
The factory manufactured the clutch and gearbox adapter to allow the use of the original BMW starter.
But they and I didn´t knew that the engine was delivered with the wrong flywheel.
It had no gear ring for the crankshaft sensor. Without this sensor´s signal the engine will not start.
As I switched to a G96 it was necessary to manufacture a new flywheel.
I decided to use the Porsche starter and the space for the original starter gear ring was used for
the crankshaft sensor´s gear ring. As additional benefit the thickness of the gearbox adapter could
be reduced and the half shafts now work at an ideal angle.
Engine and gearbox are sitting lower in the chassis compared to the SBC. At the moment the huge oil
pan is the lowest point of the engine bay. I will switch to a dry sump system later which allows the use
of a much smaller oil pan.
Schimms who answered to your question at the ultima forum has his car legalized in December 2004 in Germany. He uses the engine of the current Corvette. Using this engine is the easier way I think.
Attached some pics. I hope the infos are helpful. If you need details let me know.
Regards
Michael
